Five Ways to Get in Shape For The Summer

Five Ways to Get In Shape For The Summer
By Dr. John P. DeMann

Mason, Ohio 3/30/2008 – The first days of spring means the sun is coming out and it’s time to reveal those abdominal muscles, shoulders, and arms.

For some it’s a good thing, and for others there is some room for improvement. We asked the experts at the International Sports Sciences Association (ISSA) to tell us the 5 most powerful ways to get in shape, and stay in shape, for the upcoming summer months.

If you haven’t heard of the ISSA, they are the organization that literally teaches the nation’s top personal trainers how to get their clients into shape. Below is what the Technical support staff of the trainers to the personal trainers told us on how to get ready for the coming summer months:

1. Exercise every day – Old research said you must exercise 30 minutes a day, but the latest experts suggest this just isn’t enough. What do you need to get in the best shape of your life? 60 minutes of vigorous exercise, daily.
2. Eat 5-7 small meals per day – Yes, you heard that right! Small frequent meals throughout the day not only levels out your blood sugar, decreasing the lows you may experience throughout the day, but eating sensibly, and often, will provide your muscles and body with the appropriate nutrition you need to get you through your entire day.
3. Reduce your calories by 300 per day (if over daily amount) – There are 3500 calories in a pound of fat. So if you cut your calories by 300 per day, times 30 days in a month, that is a 9000 calorie deficit -- approximately 2 ½ half pounds. Combine this with exercise and you are virtually guaranteed to win the fight against the fat covering up your sexy abdominal section.

4. Consult a personal trainer – Let’s face it; personal trainers know their stuff. They train, study, and devote themselves to being a better health and fitness expert every day. They work out every day, eat smart, and are right in the middle of several teams of experts. If you just booked one session to ensure you are on the right track, your body will thank you for it. Not to mention your significant other.

5. Lift weights with little to no rest between sets – Here’s the fun part. The goal here is to increase your heart rate, get vigorous exercise, and above all else, stay moving! And lifting weights is one of the best ways to do it. Not only does properly lifting weights strengthen your musculoskeletal system and help keep your bones together, but a strength training program is key in developing a sexy, strong, physically attractive body. And by not resting in between sets, you will keep your heart rate up, telling your body to burn that body fat!

Why Water?

Why Water? By Dr. John P. DeMann, CPEC/ICF/ISSA

It's our body's vital fuel, a health drink from Mother Nature. It's calorie-free, inexpensive, and easily obtained. Yet few people follow the old fashioned advice to drink eight glasses of water a day.

Water is the most abundant substance in your body:

• All of your cells are soaked in water.
• Water makes up 55% to 75% of your total body weight.
• The food you eat contains about 70% water.
• A 10% reduction of water in your body can make you sick.
• A 20% loss of water can mean death.

Although you can survive for weeks without food, you can survive only a few days without water.

Water is involved in every bodily function known to man:

• Your vital fluid blood is comprised of ninety percent water, so that a reduction in water means more concentrated blood, making your body more susceptible to clotting and less efficient at delivering oxygen to your brain and muscles.
• Everything from temperature regulation to digestion to energy production is controlled by water.
• Water helps you recover from your workouts.
• Water aids in fat-based fueling of muscles.
• Water provides for storage of water inside your cells.

When you become dehydrated, all of these functions become less effective and your performance levels lower.

It is recommended that you drink eight to twelve glasses of water per day. Drinking water can:

• help us exercise longer and more efficiently
• Ward off constipation and maybe even crankiness
• help us lose weight and keep it off (water is a natural appetite suppressant)

If you are dieting, make sure to drink plenty of water so your liver can effectively metabolize body fat.

Drinking fluids, particularly water, during exercise reduces cardiovascular stress and improves performance. After a strenuous workout, you have to replace the fluids you have lost or you will suffer chronic dehydration. Dehydration is the loss of water from the body and a depletion of electrolyte levels (sodium and potassium). It is treated by replacing the water the body is lacking and by restoring electrolyte levels to normal. Dehydration may be caused by inadequate water intake or by excessive water loss, but the most common cause of dehydration is a simple failure to drink liquids. By the time you feel thirsty, you are already dehydrated. Drink water before, during, and after exercising, and remember that water reduces body temperature and makes the whole exercise process safer.

Active people need more water than inactive people do. A reduction in as little as four to five percent body water can result in a drop in physical performance as great as twenty to thirty percent. It is recommended that you consume plenty of water:

• On a daily basis
• twenty minutes before any athletic event
• following high carbohydrate meals

Do not wait until you are thirsty to drink water. By the time your body reaches that point, you are already deficient in this vital fluid. When you consider that our muscles are made up of nearly 70% to 80% water, it is easy to see why fluid replacement is so important. Dehydration upsets the natural balance of fluids in the body and can lead to serious problems, including difficulties associated with heart function and temperature-regulation.

The average person loses approximately 2.5% of total body water per day. When you participate in any activity that causes you to sweat, it depletes your body fluid levels and increases your risk of dehydration. In addition to the recommended daily water intake, it is recommended that you drink 16 ounces of water for every pound of weight lost during exercise. Since it takes your body 15 to 20 minutes to absorb 16 ounces of water, you should consume the needed amount in fifteen-minute intervals, rather than all at once.

The importance of water is unquestionable, especially for anyone who is physically active. As the major “ingredient” of the human body, plenty of water is essential to healthy and qualitative athletic performance.
